Inguinal Hernia

An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of the contents of the abdominal cavity by a weak point in the inguinal canal. Only one surgical operation can resolve an inguinal hernia. There are two types of inguinal hernias, one direct and the other indirect. These are common events and the repair of inguinal hernias is the most frequent operation in surgical practice.

Direct inguinal hernia

Indirect inguinal hernias, the abdominal contents, in particular, the small intestine, passes through the weakness of the abdominal muscles and protrudes in the abdomen. area of the Hesselbach triangle. Direct hernias present as an oval swelling, are reducible and rarely enter the scrotum. In general, they do not travel through the inguinal canal. They are the least frequent, being 0.5% of inguinal hernias with a post-operative relapse of 1%. They are more common in adults older than 45 years.

Indirect inguinal hernia

Indirect inguinal hernias occur when the abdominal contents protrude through the inner or deep inguinal ring. They descend along the inguinal canal, parallel to the spermatic cord and, over time, usually, reach the scrotum. They are the most frequent inguinal hernias, with a possible genetic factor and very common in children. They can occur in women and when they are complete they produce labial inguinal hernias.
