Gallbladder

The gallbladder is an organ that is part of the digestive system of human beings and quadruped animals (except in horses and deer). It is located below the liver. Its name in Latin is vesica fellea.

HUMAN ANATOMY

The gallbladder is a small hollow viscus, shaped like an ovoid or pear, which is approximately 5 to 7 cm in diameter. It connects with the small intestine (duodenum) through the common bile duct or common bile duct. Its function is the accumulation of bile, contains a volume of about 50 ml of bile that releases the duodenum through the above-mentioned ducts, and enters it through the papilla and ampulla of Vater. It is attached to the visceral surface of the liver.

The artery that irrigates the gallbladder

The cystic artery is an artery that supplies the gallbladder and the cystic duct. It originates as the right terminal branch of the hepatic artery itself. It does not present branches (important). It can be born at a low or high level; in the latter case, it intersects with the common bile duct and the hepatic artery, forming the Calot triangle.

Pathology of the gallbladder

The gallbladder is more known for the potential problems that can cause, since it is the place of settlement of bile salts stones (small stones) that obstruct the bile duct and generate inflammatory pathologies that, in some cases, can be eliminated with medication, and in many others, they must be treated surgically. The inflammation of the gallbladder is called cholecystitis and the presence of stones in said gallstones. The biliary tract, in addition to being blocked, can be the seat of tumors.

The hypersensitivity of the gallbladder presents with a very characteristic pain that is located in the cystic spot of Murphy. By pressing with your fingers on the right side of the abdomen, about two or three centimeters below the ridge of the ribs and at the same time inspiring deeply, the person reaches the point where just after starting to take a breath, he feels a pain sharp at the moment when the inflamed gallbladder rubs with the pressure caused by the fingers, forcing the breath to stop abruptly. It is known as a positive Murphy sign if such a reaction occurs during the inspection it may be indicative of cholecystitis.
